How to talk to your manager about perimenopause

Short answer: You do not have to tell your manager about perimenopause, but if symptoms are affecting your work, a short, practical conversation often helps. Focus on what you need rather than on symptoms: written follow ups after meetings, flexibility around bad nights, a cooler desk, or moving key work to your best hours. Prepare one or two specific requests and frame them around doing your job well.

Menopause symptoms affect work for many women. A 2023 Mayo Clinic survey of more than 4,000 women found about 1 in 8 had at least one bad work outcome from symptoms, such as missing work, cutting hours or leaving a job, at an estimated cost of $1.8 billion a year in lost work time in the US. (Faubion et al., Mayo Clinic Proceedings, 2023) Most of them never told anyone at work.

Do you have to tell them?

No. It is health information and it is yours. Some women prefer to ask for changes without naming the reason. Others find that naming it makes the conversation easier and gets better support. Either is fine.

Before the conversation

  • Know what you want. Pick one to three concrete changes.
  • Check your company's policies. Many employers now have a menopause or wellbeing policy, or flexible working rules.
  • Talk to HR first if you are unsure how your manager will respond.

Things you could ask for

  • Agendas before meetings and a written summary after.
  • Important decisions and presentations scheduled in the morning.
  • Flexibility to start later after a bad night.
  • A desk near a window or a fan; layered uniform options.
  • Fewer interruptions for focused work, such as blocked calendar time.
  • Time for medical appointments.

What to say

Keep it short and practical. For example:

"I'm going through perimenopause and some days my sleep is poor, which affects my focus in the afternoons. It would really help if we could keep our key meetings in the morning and if I could get a short written summary after them. That way I can keep doing my best work."

Or, without naming it:

"I've noticed I do my best thinking in the morning. Could we move our weekly planning meeting earlier?"

Afterwards

Send a short email confirming what you agreed. Review it in a month. If things are not working, go back to HR.

Bring evidence, if it helps
